Overview
"For me, driving in the rain is about becoming lost in time. I love the sound of raindrops pattering on the car and the rhythmic swish of the wiper blades. Making the paintings then is a way to get back to that nostalgic feeling of being safe inside the car and then slowly building it on the canvas." - Gregory Thielker
Gregory Thielker is an American artist, currently based in Paris. His work focuses on the views through the car windshield, allowing water droplets and speed to create abstractions of the world outside. His newest works on debut embrace moments of stillness and the beauty that can be found in the ordinary.

For many years, Gregory Thielker has been focused on a familiar perspective, the landscape seen from inside of the car.  He has taken this theme to ambitious lengths, with series documenting roadways in India and following the entire US Mexico border, but at heart, his work is a visceral exploration of the unnoticed moment inside of the car.  This series of windshield views actually began for the artist while as a graduate student studying painting in St. Louis.  Within his work, we see both the outside world and yet remain detached from it, safe to let thoughts wander and emotions enter in.

Biography
"Working from photographs taken during many road trips, I focus on the landscape in motion. I use oil paint with slow precision to create the fleeting effects of weather, light, and speed. Some realistic images retain the composition of the road flanked by trees, while others dissolve into abstractions of light and color. Fractions of a second become timeless in this process, like a lingering note in a musical phrase that stretches out, letting us pause in this sensation." - Gregory Thielker
