Palettes Arrêtées replaces the traditional paintbrush of Jean-Paul Donadini's Brosses Arrêtées series with the artist's palette itself, transforming another essential studio tool into the focal point of the composition. A sweeping band of blue pigment moves across a pristine white surface, shifting from bright turquoise near the palette to deep cobalt and ultramarine tones as it travels across the work. Gathered white fabric radiates from behind the palette, creating a sculptural element that echoes the movement of the painted gesture.
The work captures a single act of painting and preserves it as a permanent object, allowing the process to remain visible long after the gesture has ended. The palette, marked with remnants of mixed colors, becomes both tool and artifact, revealing traces of the artist's hand and studio practice. Thick accumulations of pigment at the leading edge of the stroke emphasize the physical weight and texture of the paint, while the restrained white background directs attention to the interplay of color, material, and movement. Through this variation on his signature series, Donadini expands his exploration of painting as both image and object, blurring the boundaries between artwork, tool, and process.
