At nearly five feet tall, Harland Miller’s “Thought After Filthy Thought” is a commanding large-scale print filled with saturated color and layered surface detail. Blocks of turquoise, pink, red and green extend across the composition with visible drips, scraped passages and irregular edges. Above them, the title appears in oversized italic lettering against a softly washed ground, giving the work the appearance of a weathered vintage book cover enlarged to architectural scale.

The phrase is unmistakably Miller, pairing dry humor with the suggestion of something more private and confessional. His invented titles often read like fragments of conversation or internal dialogue, drawing the viewer in before the richly worked color and surface take over. Here, the restrained typography and exuberant lower field create a striking balance, making the print one of the most visually dynamic works in the group.

Created in 2019, “Thought After Filthy Thought” is a hand-signed and numbered etching and relief print in colors on wove paper. It measures 58.7 x 35.2 inches and was produced in an edition of 75 plus 12 artist’s proofs.
