Artworks
Jean-Michel Basquiat USA, 1960-1988
153 x 115.9 cm
Flexible isolates a single elongated figure whose limbs arc outward in looping, calligraphic lines. The head is mask-like, with gridded markings and skeletal teeth rendered in sharp contrast against the white ground. Red, green, yellow, and black strokes punctuate the form, while a bold red oval frames the head like a target or halo. The composition is spare but forceful, allowing the figure’s elasticity and gesture to dominate the field.
Released in 2016 within the Estate’s screenprint portfolio, Flexible captures Basquiat’s interest in the expressive body as symbol. The title references dexterity and value, reinforcing his ongoing exploration of labor, identity, and authorship. Collectors are drawn to this edition for its strong singular figure and graphic clarity, qualities that translate especially well in screenprint form. It stands as one of the more compositionally focused works within the Estate print series.
