Jonathan Todryk’s “Dreaming Of A Place” layers rust, brown, ochre, and faded gray marks across a warm neutral ground. Fine lines intersect with heavier strokes, rubbed passages, curved forms, and partially obscured drawings, creating a surface that appears to hold multiple stages of the painting at once. Broad horizontal areas of pale color interrupt the underlying marks while still allowing earlier gestures to remain visible beneath them. Through this process of drawing, covering, and revealing, Todryk creates a contemporary abstract painting defined as much by what remains visible as by what has been painted over.
