Dylan Martinez's "Echelon" is a contemporary optical glass sculpture composed of precisely arranged transparent cylinders in a stepped, architectural formation. Part of the artist's Optical Series, the work takes its name from the term "echelon," referring to a stepped arrangement or sequence of levels, as well as the echelon grating, an optical instrument that uses precisely stepped surfaces to produce diffraction and interference patterns in light. The sculpture's repeating cylindrical elements create a layered composition that bends, magnifies, and fragments light as it passes through the glass. Subtle shifts in viewing angle reveal overlapping reflections and prismatic details, emphasizing the interplay between geometry, transparency, and optical perception. "Echelon" brings together Martinez's fascination with the science of light and the sculptural possibilities of glass.
