At Ease by Christina Gschwantner is organized through a series of broad, gestural brushstrokes arranged in a loose grid, each grouping defined by a distinct color range. The composition opens with pale yellows and saturated lemon tones, transitions into warmer peach and orange passages, and moves into a central field of pinks and violets before settling into cooler greys, deep greens, and a final accent of turquoise along the lower edge. Each stroke is applied with a loaded brush, producing visible shifts in opacity, pigment density, and edge definition, with areas of drag and slight drips reinforcing the material presence of paint.
The structure balances repetition with variation, allowing each color grouping to function as an individual study while maintaining cohesion through consistent scale and placement. Subtle differences in pressure and layering create depth within each mark, while the open white ground provides clarity and spacing between sections. At Ease offers collectors a refined example of Gschwantner’s process-driven abstraction, where color sequencing, surface texture, and gestural application define the composition.
