Eelco Hilgersom (b. 1979, Amsterdam) creates abstract artworks deeply rooted in his lifelong fascination with the architecture and structures found in nature. His practice explores the contrasts between shape, color, and material, inviting viewers into a dynamic interplay of complexity and nuance. Working across a range of techniques and media, Hilgersom embraces experimentation, allowing each concept to dictate its own unique process. His Habitat series exemplifies this approach, transforming inspirations from natural organisms into abstract forms that convey distinct emotional states. With reflective surfaces and vivid colors, these works become hybrid creatures—at once alien and familiar—prompting viewers to see themselves within the emotions they project. Texture plays a central role, adding layers of depth that encourage close engagement and evoke nature’s own intricate signaling systems. Hilgersom describes his art as an abstract reflection of nature’s beauty, offering both a meditation on its wonders and a reminder of our shared responsibility to cherish the world around us.
