Of Moments & Memories: A solo exhibition by Hedy Yang
Hedy Yang is a Detroit based ceramic artist whose work transforms fleeting moments into enduring objects. As a first generation Chinese American artist, Yang approaches ceramics with a sense of care, craftsmanship, and attention to detail that reflects both cultural inheritance and personal experience. Her practice spans functional and sculptural forms, unified by a desire to elevate the small rituals of daily life. What begins as an observation of a sky, a season, or a lived experience becomes a highly considered ceramic surface defined by precision, softness, and an intuitive use of color.
Of Moments and Memories brings together Yang’s atmospheric vessels and sculptural wall works, each piece capturing the emotional register of a particular place in time. Vases painted with shifting clouds, lightning, and gradients of sunrise and dusk speak to the changing states of the natural world. They reference the sky as both a familiar presence and a metaphor for memory. Her faceted wall pieces, shaped like gemstones or raindrops, refract these same skies into intimate scale, turning passing impressions into objects that feel tender, precious, and contemplative.
Across the exhibition, Yang’s surfaces carry a painterly sensitivity that belies the technical rigor of their creation. Volumes are thrown with elegance, then sanded to a velvety finish before receiving hand painted compositions with soft gradients and meticulously blended tones. Her imagery exists at the intersection of realism and imagination, reflecting skies that feel both observed and remembered. The result is a body of work that offers calm, nostalgia, and emotional presence, inviting viewers to reflect on their own memories of light, color, and atmosphere.
