Dress Rehearsal by Catie Cook presents a surreal stage-like environment where a young deer stands beneath theatrical lighting inside an empty auditorium, surrounded by backstage set pieces, curtains, and abandoned costume accessories. The painting merges natural imagery with the visual language of performance, contrasting the vulnerability of the fawn against the constructed atmosphere of theater and spectacle. Cook carefully renders the scene through atmospheric lighting, painted scenery, and cinematic composition, reinforcing recurring themes of innocence, observation, and staged femininity within her contemporary figurative practice. Through its layered symbolism and dramatic setting, Dress Rehearsal explores the tension between authenticity and performance while reflecting on the roles individuals are taught to inhabit and rehearse.
