Biography

Tabitha Booth is an American fine art photographer based in Kentucky whose work documents the people, landscapes, and working traditions of the American West. Combining cinematic composition with an intimate, documentary approach, Booth creates Western photographs distinguished by expansive skies, dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, and a strong sense of movement. Her subjects range from working cowboys and horses to the quieter moments of daily life on the ranch, capturing both the scale of the landscape and the individual character of those who inhabit it.

With more than 17 years of experience in photography, Booth brings a background in music, portraiture, and visual storytelling to her fine art practice. Her early work photographing musicians and live performances established an interest in capturing unscripted moments and the personalities behind them. That same sensibility carries into her Western photography, where the ranch replaces the stage and the daily routines of cowboys and their horses become the subjects of her compositions. Her introduction to the American West came through her husband, contemporary Western painter Jeremy Booth, whom she initially accompanied on ranch visits to photograph reference material. The two continue to collaborate on creative projects while maintaining distinct artistic perspectives, with Tabitha focusing on the spontaneous interactions and authentic moments that emerge throughout the day.

Central to Booth's approach is the importance of building relationships with her subjects. Rather than arriving with a predetermined set of images to capture, she prioritizes spending time with ranchers, learning their routines, and observing the relationships between cowboys, horses, and the land. This immersive process allows her to photograph moments as they naturally unfold, from the intensity of working livestock to quieter scenes of rest and reflection. Her experiences at ranches such as Sombrero Ranches have reinforced her interest in the trust, skill, and shared understanding that define working ranch communities.

Visually, Booth's photographs draw upon the dramatic atmosphere of the Western landscape. Low horizons, sweeping cloud formations, natural light, and deep shadows create compositions with a distinctly cinematic quality. Her use of both color and black-and-white photography allows her to explore different aspects of each scene, emphasizing the warmth and texture of the landscape in some works and the contrast, movement, and physical presence of her subjects in others. Influenced by photographers including Ansel Adams and Annie Leibovitz, Booth brings together an appreciation for photographic composition with a journalistic interest in people and their stories.

Through her fine art photography, Booth seeks to preserve an authentic view of contemporary Western life, honoring the individuals and communities whose work continues to shape its traditions. Her photographs celebrate not only the recognizable imagery of the American cowboy, but also the dedication, relationships, and everyday experiences behind it. The resulting body of work offers a personal and visually compelling portrait of the American West, grounded in genuine encounters and a lasting respect for the people who call it home.
