A Map of Hours: A solo presentation by Gregory Thielker
"For me, driving in the rain is about becoming lost in time. I love the sound of raindrops pattering on the car and the rhythmic swish of the wiper blades. Making the paintings then is a way to get back to that nostalgic feeling of being safe inside the car and then slowly building it on the canvas." - Grergory Thielker
Square One is proud to present “A Map of Hours”, a solo presentation of new original paintings by artist Gregory Thielker. The exhibition will be on view from May 16th - May 30th at Square One Gallery in St. Louis, Missouri. The opening reception event will be held Friday, May 16th from 6-9pm CST featuring an artist discussion and Q&A session with guests.
Washington University MFA Graduate Gregory Thielker is an American artist, currently based in Paris. For many years, Thielker has been focused on a familiar perspective, the landscape seen from inside of the car. He has taken this theme to ambitious lengths, with series documenting roadways globally and following the entire US Mexico border, but at heart, his work is a visceral exploration of the unnoticed moments inside of the car. This series of windshield views actually began for the artist while as a graduate student studying painting in St. Louis. Within his work, we see both the outside world and yet remain detached from it, safe to let thoughts wander and emotions enter in. For his new exhibition, “A Map of Hours”, the artist continues his series of driving paintings in the rain from different views through the day. His work focuses on the views through the car windshield, allowing water droplets and speed to create abstractions of the world outside. His newest works on debut embrace moments of stillness and the beauty that can be found in the ordinary.

With projects in locations including the US Mexico border, Afghanistan, and India, his work often blends on-site research and studio production. He has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. Recent exhibition venues include Galerie Zberro (Paris), Galerie Diego Escobar (Marseille), Galerie Le Feuvre et Roze (Paris), Castor Gallery (New York), Brown University, The Brattleboro Art Museum, Vermont, Republic Gallery, Paris, and Flashpoint Gallery, Washington, DC.
