Dan Lam American, b. 1988
"Natural processes inspire my work, and then I use those natural processes with synthetic or unnatural materials to create a natural process within the studio. I think there is a tension between these seemingly organic objects being made with completely inorganic materials." - Dan Lam
Dan Lam (b. 1988) is a contemporary American sculptor of Vietnamese heritage, internationally recognized for her vividly colored, “drippy” sculptures that blur the line between attraction and repulsion. Working with unconventional materials such as polyurethane foam, resin, and acrylics, Lam creates organic forms that appear to ooze and spill into their surroundings, evoking both desire and discomfort. Her practice emphasizes material experimentation, intuition, and play, resulting in works that feel simultaneously alien and familiar.
Lam has exhibited widely across the United States and abroad, with presentations in New York, San Francisco, Paris, and Munich. She has collaborated with major companies including Facebook, Virgin, and Meow Wolf, and her work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Forbes, and Travel + Leisure. With over one million followers across Instagram and TikTok, Lam bridges the worlds of fine art and popular culture, engaging audiences both in galleries and in digital space. She lives and works in Dallas, Texas.

Dan Lam (b. 1988) is an American sculptor of Vietnamese ancestry, internationally recognized for her brightly colored, “drippy” sculptures that challenge the boundaries between beauty and repulsion. Working primarily with unconventional materials such as polyurethane foam, epoxy resin, acrylics, and polymers, Lam creates organic, otherworldly forms that appear to ooze, bulge, and spill into the spaces they inhabit. These works embody a constant tension between attraction and aversion, inviting viewers to question their own visceral responses while confronting themes of excess, desire, and disgust.
Drawing inspiration from artists such as James Turrell, Olafur Eliasson, and Lynda Benglis, Lam embraces experimentation and the chaotic behavior of her chosen media, often allowing process to dictate form. Her practice balances play and intuition with technical control, resulting in sculptures that feel simultaneously alien and familiar. This approach has positioned Lam as a distinctive voice in contemporary sculpture, expanding the dialogue around materiality, tactility, and the phenomenology of art.
Since earning her BFA from the University of North Texas (2010) and MFA from Arizona State University (2014), Lam has exhibited extensively across the United States and internationally, with notable presentations in New York, San Francisco, Paris, and Munich. Her collaborations include major commissions with companies such as Facebook and Virgin, as well as immersive projects with the experiential art collective Meow Wolf. Widely covered by media outlets including Architectural Digest, Forbes, and Travel + Leisure, her practice resonates across both fine art and popular culture.
Beyond the gallery, Lam has cultivated a significant global following through social media, where over one million collectors, curators, and enthusiasts engage with her studio practice in real time. This digital presence has amplified her influence within contemporary art discourse, underscoring her ability to bridge traditional art world structures with new modes of audience engagement. Lam currently lives and works in Dallas, Texas.
